Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

I thought this book was simply going to be another take on the “hero stuck in a video game” story, but Arand has a lot more in store for you than that. There’s a big mystery inherent in this book which is probably going to take the whole trilogy to fully unravel, but it gives an added layer of depth and suspense to the novel. That being said, I liked the book a lot more in the first half than I did in the second. In the first half, Runner is learning to use his “in game” skills and discovering the world around him. In the second half as his skills grow the battles become much more complicated and they didn’t work quite as well for me. I felt like they slowed the story down and that is never good. Still, I’m intrigued by the mystery and definitely looking forward to seeing what happens in book two.

At first I figured this book would be alright at best. Glad I was wrong. While it does start out pretty mediocre, it grows from there into a more fully realized, fun book. Characters are added, but they exist mostly as fodder for the snark of the protagonist. Now worry not, those characters snark right back, leading to some good laugh out loud moments. It's litRPG, it's not the best the genre has to offer, but I will definitely pick up the sequel. I recommend it to anyone who knows what the litRPG genre is.

If audiobooks could be worn out, this one would be dead. I've read and listened to this series more times than I can remember and love it every single time. The story line is incredible and entertaining, the characters are oddly realistic in a fantastical manner and I really ended up caring for them quite a bit.All in all, I hope the series (starting here and continued throughout the William D Arand/Randi Darren universe) never ends!

I read this as a straight Fantasy book, ignoring the "genre," and I enjoyed it thoroughly.Good concept, very good story. I'm definitely going to buy the next oneI think the main character could have been a little less selfless at times (which, I guess, the rest of the trilogy may cover).Likewise the author. While I think the cover art was great, I was initially put off from buying the book by the picture of a boy trying to rescue his kite from a tree. It took a few turns around while browsing before I decided to give it a go. A cover showing the main characters was surely a no-brainer....

William provides an interesting concept: a fantasy setting RPG on a spaceship. The characters can't log out & if they die in the game, their brain dies & they're lifeless husks. Oh, & this is a "harem" game...w/o sex. So far, anyway. The story was good enough to keep me reading even with the obvious need for some editting. Not glaringly bad...but obvious. I've already purchased book 2 of the trilogy.

I kinda expected a typical harem type lit rpg, but was extremely surprised by the depth and detail of the story as well as the lack of blatant sex some of the genre pushes. Not that I mind the sex, but not just for the sake of having it. This story is much more emotional and intellectual than those. A great change for the genre. I am excited for the next book.

A great book and slightly new take on litrpg. The audiobook version is also really good and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy books.

Waking up in a game, not knowing how you got there, death being very real and realizing you might be the only one to save a few 100000 souls definitely adds tension. If something then causes the game to run amok, apparently going full AI which takes getting used to. Part 1 is about learning to cope with the game and surviving. The harem-part feels a bit odd and unnecessary, but the blurb warns about it and to me it is not a game breaker. All in all, a good story which I finished in one go. Definitely proceeding with the other two parts.
