Such stories will be surely old hat to the bulk of college sophomores, and probably to many a high schooler, and too many in middle school.I’m not sure quite how liberated adults should be before reading this book. I surely have friends who will be shocked that I would recommend such trash. But I do. One person’s trash is another’s treasure. This book is a rare treasure.

Some of her life choices may be questionable, especially in the culture I was raised in, but hey, that's exactly the point. She can --and should-- choose what she believes is right for herself. In the end, I found her courageous for speaking things many of us will shy away from, and to find humor in it too.

As a 50 year old woman I can look back on my life and see how this book would have been VERY useful to read at age 15. It does not matter if your life is parallel to Ms. Moran's - or not. Actually, that's the point. For once we have a brave woman who is putting her experience out there for the world to see (and laugh about). I applaud her. Anyone who condemns her, condemns her because they are not as brave, honest or true to themselves. As women we have been dictated on how to behave by mostly religious and political members - that have been predominantly men. We need to unapologetically break the glass ceiling and feel the cool wind of change upon our faces. Ms. Moran reminiscences about the confusion of being an adolescent woman through humor, intelligence and tact. It is a journey I thoroughly enjoyed.

"When the subject turns to abortion, cosmetic intervention, birth, motherhood, sex, love, work, misogyny, fear, or just how you feel in your own skin, women still often won't tell the truth to each other unless they are very, very drunk."Caitlin Moran is right. Those broads rocked my world and led me away from the path of righteousness, and I THANK THEM every day for doing so. Thirty years have slipped by, and I've yet to find another group of women to whom I can say ANYTHING and not be judged. And, man, do I ever miss that! Now, if you talk about S-E-X, it's deemed T-M-I. Why is wanting to talk about something we all do too much information? Why does no one wants to go there?Well, Ms. Moran GOES THERE. From pubic hair (Yes!) to high heels (No!), she lets it all hang out. And what fun it was spending time with her. Though a continent and more than a decade separate us, I may possibly have more in common w/ Moran than any woman I've met in real life. I found her let-your-freak-flag-fly message to be reassuring, entertaining and pants-wettingly funny. Not everyone will like her, or her book. And that's okay. I bought this book used and it arrived in good advertised condition.This book is old school but, In my mind, the series is one of the better language learning systems that is light but more comprehensive than some. The reason I say that is it walks the line between a common phrase book and a comprehensive language book. The phrase books like a Berlitz are nice and handy to have in your pocket while traveling, but they have little grammer explanation. Comprehensive language books are great too for those looking to seriously dive into learning a language. I've tried that route, but find that my dreams of learning the language are greater than my ambition. So, I like this Living Language series because it seems to strike a nice balance.This book/tape has all the phrases and goes a little further than the typical phrase book and exposes the learner to more grammer, sentence structure, verbs and increased vocabulary that a serious traveler will need. I think it is perfect for pre-study before going to a country. It's probably a little too large to be a practical pocket phrase book one might keep in their pants pocket.The bonus is that the Living Language has an accompanying cassette tape or CD that you can follow along with. It didn't come with my book but I already had the Tape (yes, I'm old school). I have the same Living Language book/tape (or CD) package in other languages that have been very helpful in pre-travel language learning that IMO really give the traveler a headstart in language exposure prior to the boots hitting the ground, which I feel enhances the travel experience. Audio in the car and follow along with the book when ya can. If you approach it that way, you get a good run-down of the language and, like I say, more rewarding to the traveler.

A very good book to get a few basic phrases and a general understanding of French and France for visitors. I am told that if you know a little French and at least show good effort, people will gladly help you. There are also little hints and tips about Paris and visiting the country throughout the book, for example "Tipping" and eating at a restaurant. I borrowed a ton of different French language books from the library and this one seemed the best to me. The library version had the CD's too, but I just want the book to bring with me when I visit.I purchased this book used from a third party seller (AZ-Emporium) and it was just as they described it- Very good, no missing and/or bent pages. I am very happy with the product and the seller.

Having had a year of French in college, I was concerned that this Audio book would be too basic for me, but I found out it wasn't! It does cover some very basic things (greetings, numbers, etc.) which would be more helpful for beginners, but it also covers typical situations in a trip (airport, restaurant, accommodations, etc.), for which the vocabulary and grammar may not be learned until advanced level courses.It comes with 2 Audio CD's of about 70 minutes each, broken into 12+ lessons. The book has all the phrases/conversations in the CD's, plus some additional tips/info, as well as a dictionary section with vocabulary targeted for travelers. The book has 260+ pages and it is of very small size, so it is ideal for carrying it around in your trip.I listened to the CD's while driving, though I recommend reading the corresponding lessons afterwards or in advanced to listening to the disc, as it helps to associate the spelling to the pronunciation. The CD's mostly have words and phrases in them, but they also have small conversations at a bank/restaurant/hotel/airport depending on the lesson. Each word/phrase in the disc is spoken once in English and then twice in French, so you can't miss it if you're paying attention.I strongly recommend this item, even if you already have basic understanding of French, as it will help you communicate and get around in your trip!

This was a required book for a "get acquainted" course in French. It is no longer in print so I was glad to find it. (The college had arranged for a special reprint with the publisher, and the cost was outrageous for us, but probalby reasonable from the publsher standpoint.) It has a lot of great information and covers a lot of day-to-day situations. The problem is that the audio CDs were not available and it is difficult to get the pronunciation from Fodor's attempted "phonetics." The cultural explanations are very interesting and I imagine would be helpful for a traveler.

This is another replacement for one that I have had for many years. Excellent resource to brush up on the language. I would recommend this resource also for beginners and or travelers.

Outdated. You learn how to say phone booth.

I was very disappointed.This book is 15 years old (originally published in 1989 and updated in 2002). For 'French for Travelers' information, it should be more up-to-date. I teach a French for Travelers class to adults, and had thought this book would be more extensive.

I have been listening to this cd on my way to work in preparation for a month long stay in Paris. While I'm not going to sound like an expert when I arrive, I'll at least be more confident in pronunciations because of this set. That was my intention so I'd say this was a good buy!
